PhotoScan: Share Your Classic Print Photos on Instagram [Video]

Like most of you, I have a plethora of printed photos of my childhood and teen years.

Featuring my family members, some bad haircuts, even the high school crush (oops).

And they make me cherish all the good memories.

But how do we celebrate the times and folks who have enriched our lives?

One way is by creating “digital snaps” of those printed photos with your smartphone or digital camera and sharing them on Instagram.

But you rarely get decent snaps. In fact, printed photos taken with your mobile camera often have a glare from the light streaked overhead across the photo.

Also, the result is not aligned properly in most instances. And, without cropping, the photo may even show the surface it was placed on in its digital version.

Want to save yourself from these nuisances?

Download PhotoScan…and I promise you won’t look back.

PhotoScan for Instagrammers

PhotoScan is an app by Google that allows you to produce glare-free digital copies of your old pictures without needing a real scanner.

The app comes with a friendly interface that enables quick image detection and edits.

To put an old photo to good use, open PhotoScan on your iPhone or Android phone and fit the image in the frame that shows up. 4 white dots will then appear on the corners of the photo being scanned.

Move the phone towards the dots; they’re going to turn blue when scanned. After all 4 dots turn blue, the app will process and save your photo.

PhotoScan is programmed to remove glare and other imperfections to deliver a high quality result. It also features advance enhancement and editing tools like saturation adjustments and exposure.

Google also revealed that the app has 12 “styles” that can be used to enhance photos further. The filters rely on machine intelligence to adjust saturation, warmth, sharpness or brightness.

Here’s a video I made showing the app in action.

Not only will you be able to share your memories, but also keep them safe as the printed versions are prone to wear and tear.

Over to You

As you see in the video, the clarity of the image is incredible and way ahead of using a smartphone camera to take a picture of a picture.

Use hashtags like #throwbackthursday #childhoodmemories and #blastfromthepast when sharing the photos you digitize with PhotoScan on Instagram to gain more eyeballs.

Mannequin Challenge by TNS Beaconhouse – The Lil Ones Shine

2016’s “Harlem Shake” – the Mannequin Challenge – has seen several groups in Pakistan action posing for a video, frozen.

Most of those groups consisted of adults, but the Mannequin Challenge at TNS Beaconhouse Lahore (made possible by my team) is the first to feature only kids.

Kids, like adults, equally good at the Mannequin Challenge.

Here’s the video of the young ones in statue mode doing creative poses at a section inside the school called "Jungle Gym".

TNS Beaconhouse is the first in the schooling sector to perform the mannequin challenge.

I pitched the idea to team just a few days after the mannequin challenge surfaced online. If they had made the decision to execute it early, TNS Beaconhouse would have been the first in Pakistan to take on this challenge.

But as the saying goes, better late than never. :)

I and my team powered this mannequin challenge after Beaconhouse TNS agreed to our pitch.

Credit goes to the school’s staff and the young participants who made it top notch.

Their faces were brimming with excitement when they heard they’re going to take on this viral trend.

What’s intriguing is that they weren’t prepared beforehand.

Here’s How to Create a Centered Instagram Bio

Being successful on Instagram is a long game … still you can have quick wins courtesy of a few tweaks.

One of those tweaks is related to your Instagram bio.

Take a good look at your bio. Does it do anything to keep you fresh and interested?

If it doesn’t … it’s boring. That’s no fun for anyone checking out your Instagram profile.

So what can you do to ensure that your Instagram bio makes a good impression and that too within a few seconds?

There are several things you can do (add emojis for instance), but try this because you’ve never likely done this before.

Center your Instagram bio.

It’s rare to come across Pakistani Instagrammers who’re using centered Instagram bios.

Therefore, it’s an opportunity for you to experiment and see if a centered bio helps your profile gain traction.

I personally think a centered bio offers a unique appeal and separates important details that your profile visitors find easy to grasp.

The Required Steps to Center Instagram Bios

Instagram doesn’t guide users on how to center their Instagram bios, but the process is actually really simple. Implement these steps to center your bio.

1. Open your Instagram profile and choose the “edit your bio” option.

2. To center the bio, you need to create spaces. This can’t be done by hitting the “spacebar” on your desktop or the “enter” key on your smartphone. Instead, you need to copy and paste spaces to center your bio. Copy the empty white space between the stars (*) below (make sure to copy the empty space between, not the symbol * itself.

*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀*

3. Paste the copied space before the text and elements you want to appear centered in your Instagram bio. If you fail at perfectly centering your bio in the first attempt, you can always delete or add some spaces till you get it right.

Note that an Instagram bio can be 160 characters maximum, so you may have to remove some elements to center it perfectly.

Here’s what centered bio looks like.

Just remember to copy the space and adjust it to your liking.

Mannequin Challenge – Let’s Do This Pakistan

If you’ve seen your co-workers or colleagues pretend like they’re statues inside a museum lately, don’t be alarmed.

They’re attempting the mannequin challenge.

It’s the new viral craze that has taken Instagram feeds by storm. All you gotta do is stay still in the position you are in.

The mannequin challenge has been attempted by many (celebrities, sports persons, politicians, etc.) around the world, but Pakistan is yet to jump the bandwagon with full throttle.

What the Mannequin Challenge Looks Like

The effect is like being a part of a still movie. Employees holding real-time facial expressions during the middle of a conversation, college-goers pausing a dance move while rehearsing for an upcoming play, and relatives of a bride freezing while doing funny poses at a wedding event.

It’s probably easy to just stand still, but you won’t get any praise on social media without inserting some elbow grease into your motionless efforts. It’s a fun thing to do, but unlike the Ice Bucket Challenge, there’s no connection with an affiliated charity.

I’ve rounded up a few videos you can take inspiration from while attempting the mannequin challenge. Of course, I urge you to be original and creative.

Here’s a workout-based mannequin challenge:

Kevin Hart never fails to disappoint. His face expressions are hilarious. Other celebrities like Kelly Rowland and Beyonce have also done the this challenge. Will Pakistani celebrities hop the mannequin train? Time will tell.

Even the cast of “Dancing With the Stars” joined in on the fun.

A video posted by Valentin (@iamvalc) on

The video features pros, cameramen, contestants and others participating. Later, they broke out from the still motion and burned the dance floor.

And this is what happened at the White House:

The Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA champions of 2016, were honored in the White House. They attempted the Mannequin challenge during their presence. Michelle Obama did a selfie with James, while others stayed still in different positions skillfully.

You Can Win Something

While there’s no prize involved officially, I’ve decided to give away a surprise gift to the head of the team that does the best mannequin challenge in Pakistan.

You just have to use the following hashtags #mannequinchallenge #pakistan #aqdigital when you upload your video to Instagram or any other social media platform. Here's a graphic that simplifies the explanation.

Apart from giving away a surprise gift, I’ll also spread your video on Instagram so that it gets more views. In addition, you can contact me if you want assistance in production. I'll be on the lookout for the videos you make.

The Art of Using Emojis on Instagram

Do you know what stupid-simple ingredient smart Instagrammers are using to cook up their engagement these days?

It’s the :-) <3.

Yes, emojis. From a blooming flower to a dog taking a nap, you’ll notice that top Instagram profiles leverage emojis to liven up their feed and communications.

The benefits of using emojis are undeniable. They tie in the emotion that people articulate offline. A survey from last year revealed that 92% of internet users applied emoji in some manner. Twitter even released an emoji for Pakistan’s Independence Day this year. Given their rising popularity, it’s a good time for Instagrammers to get in on action.

Using Emojis on Instagram

There are several ways to use emojis on Instagram, but the effective ones are few. Below I’ve explained where and how to use emojis for the best results.

1. Use Emojis in Captions

Did you know that 50% of all comments and captions on Instagram include an emoji or two? That’s one reason to jump on the bandwagon. Another is the fact that the use of emojis inside a caption allows you to entertain your viewers and show off your personality.

Mangobaaz does a great job at mixing emojis with text in some of their captions.

Without turning their caption into an emoji singing fest, they did just enough to add visual appeal.

Hardees Pakistan also did a decent job at using emojis in captions.

But there’s room for improvement. For instance, they can use a sun emoji, then an emoji of a person sweating, followed by an ice cream/milkshake, the existing emojis, and a happy face in the end.

2. Use Emojis in Your Bio

It’s my personal opinion that one can’t create a killer Instagram bio without the use of emojis. Make a great first impression by using cute, serious, professional, quirky, or any kind of emojis in your bio rather than entirely filling it up with time-consuming things known as words.

It’s surprising that Pakistani brands aren’t utilizing emojis in their Instagram bios; I say this because I browsed bios of more than 50 brands from different industries on Instagram, and found just one or two that had one or two emojis in their bios.

Therefore, I’ve used my personal Instagram bio as an example for better explanation.

Emojis make captivating Instagarm bios

The emojis I used are acting as bullet points to my profile and all of them are unique. I’ve also used the downward finger emoji twice to direct people towards my email, rather than saying get in touch with me via email.

Note: There are different ways to use emojis in an Instagram bio. You can have words scattered with emojis (use emojis as bullet points and as a direction for a call-to-action), words with one emoji, a few emojis at the end, or just emojis with no words (yes, they’re strong enough to stand on their own.

3. Use Emojis in Comments

Want your comment to be memorable or simply funny? Consider using emojis when commenting on Instagram posts. It’s a great way to build relationships; don’t be surprised if you get shout outs from other Instagrammers.

Here’s an example.

Use emojis in Instagarm comments

The guy who left the comment is showing affection towards the profile owner's photography through the use of emojis. Not sure what the cigarettes mean though. :D

You can also use emojis while tagging others in comments. Perhaps something witty and funny will allow you to build a good relationship with the tagged profile if it isn’t owned by someone you know. Imagine getting the attention of a great brand through the use of emojis – there's a possibility.

It’s a Wrap

Like I said before, emojis can help you cut through the noise. Use them smartly and people will start noticing the unique angle you take. If you’ve never used emojis before on Instagram, use these examples as an inspiration to get started.

The Best Free Image Editing Apps for Instagrammers

Here there – this is my first post on this site!

Today I’m talking about Instagram photo editor options. Specifically, how you can enhance the images that you want to post on Instagram.

And as great as Instagram’s built-in photo editing features are, you can certainly raise your Insta-game by using third-party apps.

The best free photo editing apps for Instagram will allow any Pakistani Instagrammer to publish compelling visuals on their feed… no Photoshop skills needed!

As a result, you have the opportunity to not only beautify the special moments of your life, but create your own blend of aesthetic.

So, without further ado, here are the best free photo editing apps for Instagrammers.

Note: I’ve not cherry-picked these apps. No favorites involved. The list was compiled based on the features offered in these apps and, when available, their reviews. All the apps are downloadable in Pakistan.

1. Snapseed

Instagram Photo Editor Snapseed

This photo-editor has a wide array of editing tools that over-power Instagram’s built-in offerings – especially the Brush function and HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing – are standouts.

You can apply frames, unique textures and filters at the same time with Snapseed, so creating your own style is a breeze.

The feature that I loved (and you will too, likely) is called ‘Healing”. It removes the unwanted patches and spots on your photos like smudges on your face, or the little crumbs in the background.

Snapseed is available for both iPhone and Android.

2. Perfect365 (selfie enthusiasts take note)

Instagram selfie apps

I’d love to see a statistic or two on the number of selfies taken in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi and other cities where mobile penetration is high. Regardless, we both know the number is freakishly high.

Therefore, Perfect365 had to be on the list. The Insta-celebs out there would shed tears of joy after discovering the capabilities of this app.

Smiles can be stretched, teeth can be whitened, genes can be fought, eyelashes can be inserted, and even pounds can be shed. Ahem. Fill your Instagram feed with the red carpet beauty looks.

Perfect365 is available for both iPhone and Android users.

3. VSCO

Easy photo editing for Instagram

If you’ve played with Instagram photo editor apps in the past, I’m sure you know what VSCO offers. For those who don’t, the app allows you to modify the exposure, saturation level, temperature and contrast of your image.

For me, “Exposure” is the standout feature in this app; it helped me to convert dark shady images into something much illuminating while retaining the natural feel of the image.

The app’s greatest strength though is its collection of raw filters. You need to pay for some filters, while others are free to use. Check out A6, ACG and HB2; they have the bluish appearance that looks great on images.

VSCO is available for both iPhone and Android.

4. Magic Hour Lite

Edit Instagram Photos

Do I have any artiste reading this post? Yes? Perfect. This is the ideal app for your needs. It has creative design features, professional editing tools, and loads of pre-set as well as downloadable filters.

This Instagram photo editor app should be used with care. Try to avoid filters that take away attention from the image itself. I recommend experimenting with the following ones: sx-70 8 and faded memory.

Also, use tools like black and white mode, rotate, scale, crop, etc. to optimize your photos. Now you’re just a download away from impressing your followers.

Magic Hour Lite is available for both iPhone and Android users.

Like I said before, you don’t need to be a professional editor/artist/photographer/designer to enhance your Instagram images. Get started with these image editing apps and improve the outlook of your photos.

I’d talk about a lot more apps in the future, as well as give away filter packs and editing apps that cost money. Follow me on Instagram and subscribe to my newsletter below for the latest on Instagram.
